Juan Carlos Lugo founded a private investment group
In August 2020, Madrid’s summer sun was still bright, but the city’s pace was much slower than in previous years. The impact of the pandemic had not yet fully subsided, and many investors remained uneasy. It was in this atmosphere that Juan Carlos Lugo decided to take a major career step: establishing a private investment group for core clients.
For Juan, this decision wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, but rather a natural extension of years of professional development. His early studies at IE Business School and the University of Chicago gave him a deep global perspective; his time as an analyst in Santander Bank’s research department honed his keen understanding of data and fundamentals; and over a decade of experience as a Wall Street trader further instilled in him a deep understanding of the market’s pulse and trader psychology. He understands that in uncertain times, the security and growth of assets require strategy, discipline, and trust.
In March 2020, he successfully guided his clients to hedge against risk in the early stages of the pandemic through defensive strategies. In May, he keenly capitalized on the structural opportunities presented by the European Central Bank’s Pandemic Emergency Purchase Program (PEPP), injecting solid returns into client portfolios. These achievements not only solidified his professional reputation among clients but also helped more people realize that there are those in the market who can remain calm amidst turmoil.
However, Juan also observed a common problem exposed by most ordinary investors during the pandemic: a lack of stable sources of information and strategic guidance. Amid the noise of social media and news feeds, many people made investment decisions driven by emotion rather than logic. For Juan, this presented a significant risk and one of the reasons he decided to create a private investment group. He hoped to foster a small, elite community where members could access reliable market analysis and actionable strategies in real time, rather than being driven by emotions and rumors.
In early August, he began contacting his long-trusted clients and familiar investment partners, inviting them to a closed communication platform. Juan made it clear that this wasn’t a trading community seeking short-term profits, but rather a strategic alliance focused on achieving steady long-term asset appreciation. During the first online meeting, he said, “In the market, we can’t change the direction of the wind, but we can decide when and where to set sail.”
This group utilizes a tiered information-sharing mechanism. For junior members, he provides daily market briefings and risk alerts to help them form basic market judgment. For senior members, he offers more in-depth strategic analysis and asset allocation advice, covering bonds, stocks, derivatives, and international market opportunities. He also leverages his connections on Wall Street to periodically invite overseas analysts or former colleagues to share front-line perspectives, enabling group members to proactively perceive market trends.
Juan is very strict in selecting members. He aims to maintain the purity and quality of the group. Members can communicate with each other, but they must respect strategy and discipline. He believes that the true value of investment lies not in short-term returns but in long-term compounding and risk management. He even requires some members to submit their past investment records before joining the group, so that he can better formulate recommendations tailored to their individual risk tolerance.
By the end of August, this private investment group had begun to take shape. Although small in number, member participation was extremely high, and the speed and quality of market information feedback far exceeded those from public channels. For Juan, this was a new endeavor—a shift from a one-way investment advisory role to one of organizing and mentoring a small investment community.
In his view, this isn’t just a platform for information sharing, but rather a platform for the transmission of ideas. He hopes members will learn more than just how to select stocks or allocate bonds, but rather how to remain calm amidst market noise and volatility, and how to find certainty amidst uncertainty. Juan understands that the pandemic will eventually pass, but market uncertainty will always exist. The true purpose of this private investment group is to empower more people to face the future with rationality and strategy.
