Richard S. Hunt Launches Innovative Course on Financial Market Microstructure at Cornell University
Cornell University’s Johnson School of Management recently welcomed a groundbreaking course, “Financial Market Microstructure”, which was developed by Richard S. Hunt, professor of finance and head of global equity sales at CSC Bella Grove Partners LLC. This special course, which combines cutting-edge academic theories with practical experience on Wall Street, has quickly become a popular program for students majoring in financial engineering.
Professor Hunt has transformed his more than 20 years of practical experience in serving global institutional investors into teaching materials. The course covers a complete knowledge system from traditional market maker mechanisms to the evolution of cryptocurrency order books. Uniquely, the course adopts a “dual-teacher classroom” model, inviting quantitative analysts from CSC Bella Grove’s trading department to remotely demonstrate how high-frequency trading algorithms respond to changes in market microstructure. By analyzing real market data, students learn to identify key market phenomena such as liquidity black holes and order flow toxicity.
As a core innovation of the course, Hunt introduced the “microstructure sandbox” simulation system. Based on CSC Bella Grove’s proprietary transaction monitoring technology, the system allows students to experience the impact of different trading strategies on market quality in a virtual environment. An MBA student who took the course said: “By adjusting the minimum quotation unit and order type parameters, we intuitively understand how regulatory rules shape market behavior, which is a learning experience that textbooks cannot provide.”
The opening of this course marks a new height of cooperation between academia and financial practice. Professor Hunt said that some course modules have received continuous technical support from CSC Bella Grove, and plans to develop a series of online education products in the future to promote its market microstructure research methodology to a wider range of investors. The Provost of Cornell University commented that this “embedded school-enterprise cooperation” model has set a new benchmark for the training of financial talents.
